[Time . . . no longer embarrassed every time . . . ]

Over the first course of their recurring Friday afternoon riposte, the Vicar of Vilka and the Philosopher-Prince found their banter turning serious to a degree usually seen only after later courses.

"My friend," said the Prince, "I saw you in the back of the room at this week's Council of Several meeting, and you appeared quite engaged in our discussions. You offered no comment in the meeting, and you did not linger afterward, as you so often do. I confess that I was disappointed, because all through the meeting I had looked forward to visiting with you afterward."

The Vicar reponded quietly, "I had not meant to keep silence, but there was no opportunity to comment. I confess that I left in disappointment and some measure of frustration."

The Prince showed surprise. "No opportunity to comment? On what issue?"

"The main road plan."

"My friend, there is always an opportunity to comment . . ." The prince paused, then continued, ". . . Unless I forgot to call for comments." The Prince tried to remember. "I recall there being no comments, but . . . did I forget?"

"In my attempt to be charitable, I did conclude that you forgot."
